
PCM stayed undefeated in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference softball by defeating Greene County on Tuesday in Monroe 9-2. The Mustangs, ranked number four in Class 3A, improved to 11-0 in the conference and 14-1 overall while the Rams lost their fourth straight game, falling to 5-6 in the league and 6-9 on the season.
Coach Tom Kennedy’s team took a 1-0 lead on sophomore Makenna Ebersole’s second inning solo homer, her second of the season and second in a span of less than 24 hours. The Mustangs scored a run of their own in the second and the game was tied, 1-1 after two innings. The Mustangs took the lead with three third inning runs after the first three batters reached before an out was recorded with all three crossing home plate for a 4-1 lead for the home team. The Rams had runners at the corners with one out in the fourth, but did not score. Two more PCM runs scored in the fourth for a 6-1 lead. The Mustangs stranded two runners in scoring position in the fifth and the score went to 7-1 after five innings with another PCM run. Junior Kaycee Pittman’s fine catch in left field ended the threat in that frame. The Rams put together a two out rally in the sixth with a walk to Ebersole, a slap hit single by junior Kaycee Pittman, and a run scoring single from sophomore pitcher Alaina Heard to close to within 6-2. PCM led 9-2 after six innings, which was the final .
Heard took the pitching loss, allowing nine runs, five earned runs, on nine hits, three walks, one batter hit with a pitch, and two strikeouts. In addition to Ebersole’s homer, the Rams had singles from senior Payton Kokenge, sophomores Sara Morlan, Heard, Bellah Johnson, and junior Kaycee Pittman.
The Rams play another upper echelon Heart of Iowa team tonight on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com when West Marshall (State Center) visits Jefferson. First pitch is set for 7:30 p.m. with coverage starting shortly after 7 o’clock.
