Recently, the Greene County School District released information regarding changes to student transportation ahead of the upcoming 2025-26 school year.
While the district originally presented a reduction of the number of bus stops in Jefferson and limitations in proximity to school buildings for student transportation, Superintendent Brett Abbotts announced updates. He appreciates and thanks the community for their feedback and comments and says that while the district team continues to evaluate and identify improvements and address concerns with transportation of students, on June 30th there will be a new outline of changes and next steps.
Abbotts tells Raccoon Valley Radio there were multiple factors that led to looking at possible changes with transportation, which includes lack of availability of bus drivers, overcrowding on town routes, and an increase in activity routes, among others. As for the activities and extra-curricular programs needing school transportation, Abbotts points out that this is also a challenge to find a rotation of bus drivers, but recently coaches have expressed wanting to be bus drivers, which he notes that the district has been able to accommodate those requests.
Abbotts states that transportation has been an ongoing issue for several years for the district and trying to find substitute drivers have become more of the norm, but he urges anyone who would like to learn more about what it takes to be a bus driver to contact the district. The district office number is 515-386-4168.
