A local non-profit organization in Greene County is hosting a new fundraiser on Tuesday to raise awareness and reflect on loved ones who have addictions.

Midwest Wellness and Recovery Owner Megan Waters says their Foundation is putting on an “Out of the Dark Into the Light” Glow Walk Fundraiser that takes place at Spring Lake Park on Tuesday at 8:30pm at the main shelter house, with check-ins starting at 7:45pm. She tells Raccoon Valley Radio this event serves several reasons in their effort to spread awareness, support available resources and break down the stigmas of individuals that are dealing with addictions.

Waters points out it is important for everyone to take time to honor the memories of those that were lost from addiction because they are more than their addiction, but as a person who was full of life and purpose. She also mentions that the event serves as a way for people to support individuals who may be struggling with their addiction and that there is help available. Waters talks about another important reason is to celebrate people that are recovering from addiction to gain back their lives.

Waters says they wanted to have the walk at Spring Lake Park because it was important to support the community and the natural beauty of the environment is a great way to increase someone’s neurotransmitters that can help with calming, excitement, memory and pleasure. She stresses that substances give people a false sense of these thoughts and deplete the body’s natural response to chronic use.

Waters notes that there are different ways people can support their cause, including registering for the walk for $25, purchasing a luminary bag for $5, which will be lit that night to highlight the path for the walk and some will have names in memory of, supporting for and celebrating individuals recovering from addiction. Additionally, anyone can also make a monetary donation to help with supporting resources and other means that the MWR Foundation helps with Midwest Wellness and Recovery to continue its mission to uplift individuals on their journey to recovery, fostering a holistic transformation of mind, body, and spirit.
