This weekend is looking to be a miserable one for Iowa residents and visitors with very hot temperatures in store.
National Weather Service Meteorologist Alexis Jimenez says that an excessive heat advisory has been issued for Iowa this weekend, with a possible extreme heat warning for portions of the state. She tells Raccoon Valley Radio why the advisory was put in place.
“Looking especially at portions of western and northwestern Iowa, are going to be experiencing some extreme heat by Iowa standards, even in the nighttime hours where you don’t get a ton of reprieve. So what’s going on is all this weekend will have highs statewide in the 90s and then even approaching 100 as we get into northwest and western Iowa as mentioned. Overnight lows aren’t going to dip too far below 80s, so we’ll be in the upper 70s even in the overnight hours and it’s going to be muggy, and heat indices are going to be approaching 105 in the afternoon in those parts of the extreme heat warning.”
Jimenez mentions that it is highly advised for residents to limit time outside to stay safe from the heat. She adds that for those that do have to be outdoors, make sure to take plenty of breaks, drink plenty of water, and if you start feeling unwell, stop what you are doing and go inside.
