With just one win in their first 11 games, the Greene County High School baseball team hosted Nevada at Allensworth Field in Jefferson last night. That one win came on May 30 at Nevada, 8-6, and this time around the Rams completed the two game sweep of the Cubs, 12-11. Coach Kyle Stalder’s team is now 2-10, 2-9 while the Cubs fall to 4-6 in conference games and 9-9 overall.
The Rams were up 5-0 after one inning, 7-2 after five, and 12-7 at the end of the sixth. Two dropped pop ups helped the Cubs rally in the seventh to within 12-11 and the potential tying run was at third base when the game ended on a strikeout. Starting pitcher Noah Hinote got the win after going the first five innings. After Camden Jacobs and Teagan Chisholm relieved, Hinote came on to record a strikeout to end the game.
The Cubs out hit the Rams 14-11 and both teams had defensive miscues with five errors charged to Greene County and four from Nevada.
Crew Conner was injured when a Nevada batter popped up in front of first base and he ran Conner over as Crew was in the act of trying to make the catch. Conner was down for several minutes before leaving the field on his own power. He did not return. Zach Stalder had a two run single in Conner’s leadoff spot in the batting order and Conner also had a run scoring single when he was in there. Hinote had three singles with base hits from Gavyn Winters, Isaac Carman, Lane Fields, Nathan Towers, Chisholm, and Jaron Jacobs. Fields had two RBI with one each from Carman and Hinote.
The win stopped an eight game losing streak for Greene County and it was the first win at Allensowrth Field after six home losses to begin the season.
