Greene County was a 6-2 Heart of Iowa Activities Conference softball winner vs. Nevada on Friday night in Jefferson. Coach Tom Kennedy’s Rams are now 8-9 overall and 7-6 in conference games while the Cubs are 2-13, 1-11. Greene County has doubled the amount of wins from 2024 when they were 4-20 overall and 3-13 in conference play.

The underdog Cubs led 2-0 after the first inning, taking advantage of a hit batter and an error. The Rams chipped away, eventually scoring the last six runs of the contest. Sophomore Makenna Ebersole knocked in the first Greene County run with a second inning single. The Rams tied the game at 2-2 in the third, then went ahead 4-2 in the fourth, 5-2 in the fifth, and 6-2 after six.

The Rams had 12 hits, all singles, with two from Ebersole and one run batted in. Sophomore Bellah Johnson also singled twice and had one RBI, as did senior Payt0n Kokenge. Sophomore Sara Morlan singled two times, Junior Becca Anderson had a base hit and a run batted in, with singles from junior Kaycee Pittman, and sophomores Alivya Smith and Alaina Heard.

Heard threw all seven innings for the pitching victory, allowing one hit and  no earned runs. She struck out six batters, walked three, and hit one with a pitch. The Rams were charged with two errors.

The Rams play twice in Denison today in the Denison-Schleswig Tournament vs. Underwood (6-13) and Glenwood (9-10), then are back in Heart of Iowa action on Monday vs. Roland-Story in Roland.
