Greene County completed its busiest week of the softball season by playing twice in Denison on Saturday at the Denison-Schleswig Tournament Coach Tom Kennedy’s Rams stand at 10-9 on the season after winning 7-5 vs. Underwood and 12-4 via the eight run rule against Glenwood. Games were limited to a 90 minute time limit.

Sophomore Alaina Heard, the top Greene County pitcher, threw every inning in game one vs. Underwood that went six innings. She allowed one earned run on two hits and one walk while striking out eight Eagles. The contest was error filled with Underwood being charged with five errors and the Rams with nine miscues. Underwood fell to 6-14 while the Rams improved to 9-9. Greene County had four hits including a triple from sophomore Makenna Ebersole and two singles by Payton Kokenge. Junior Kaycee Pittman had one base hit. Heard drove in two runs with one each by Pittman, plus seniors Violet Reedy and Chanlyn Cunningham.

Freshman Hannah Fouch threw game two, going all five innings against a Glenwood team that entered the day with a 10-9 record. Three of the four runs for Glenwood were earned. Fouch gave up just four hits and two walks to go with six strikeouts. The offense took advantage of a strong wind favoring hitters with the third homer of the season, and third this week for Ebersole, as well as the first this season for junior Becca Anderson. In all, the Rams had 15 hits. Sophomore Sara Morlan doubled, tripled, singled, and she drove in one run. Kokenge singled three times and had two RBI. Anderson’s homer drove in three runs. Ebersole added a single to her solo homer, with three singles for Pittman. Freshman Breanna Pope doubled twice and she collected two RBI and sophomore Kaliyah Minnihan added a double and she knocked in a run.

The Rams went 4-2 for the six games played June 17-21, winning the last four. Next up is Roland-Story in Roland on Monday in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference softball. The Norsemen overcame an early 3-0 deficit in Jefferson earlier this season and won 6-3 in eight innings the first time these two teams met.
