There is a new addition to the area where the Greene County Freedom Rock is, along East Lincoln Way in Jefferson.

The Jefferson American Legion Post #11 recently installed a gazebo over the picnic table that their organization had previously put in place, which is also near the trailhead for the Raccoon River Valley Trail. Post Commander Fred Long explains the situation that happened a few years later after the picnic table was put in place.

“There were all kinds of shade trees around. Well most of those shade trees were ash and they cut them all down, so now the picnic table was sitting right out in the hot sun. So we decided to put a gazebo over the top of it so people can sit there in the shade and be a little more comfortable.”

Long tells Raccoon Valley Radio that every year their local American Legion Post wants to do a community project and building the gazebo was a unanimous decision. He talks about how he felt the finished product looks.

“Well, it came together really well. We bought a kit and we had a half a dozen or so of volunteers that put it together and amazingly everything fit the way it was supposed to, and it was pretty seamless, actually. The hard part was figuring out which bolt goes in which hole, but we got it all figured out.”

Long thanks everyone who was involved in building the new structure, including those volunteers who helped that were not part of the American Legion organization.
