Greene County was going for its seventh softball win in a row on Wednesday night and Coach Tom Kennedy’s team got the job done, albeit late vs. the Saydel Eagles in Des Moines. A 10 run sixth inning carried the Rams to the win, 11-3 by the eight run rule after six innings. The Rams were down 3-0 at one point and 3-1 after five innings. The Rams are 9-6 in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference and 13-9 overall. The Eagles are 2-15, 2-12. The Rams are close to clinching a winning season overall and have done so in the conference with only one HOIAC contest left, which is next week in Jewell vs. South Hamilton, one of the lower division teams. Depending on what others in the conference do, the Rams could finish as high as a second place tie or as low as fifth in the nine team HOIAC. Greene County is one of the few teams with just one conference game remaining and some have as many as five left to play.
Sophomore Aliana Heard was the winning pitcher. she went six innings, giving up six hits and three earned runs. She walked only one batter, did not hit anyone with a pitch, and had seven strikeouts..
The Rams had most of their 14 hits late in the game with all of them singles. Senior Payton Kokenge, juniors Kaycee Pittman and Becca Anderson, and sophomores Bellah Johnson and Kaliyah Minnihan each collected two hits. Rams with one hit were sophomore Makenna Ebersole, Heard, sophomore Sara Morlan, and senior Chanlyn Cunningham.. Kokenge and Johnson each drove in a pair of runs, with one RBI each from Ebersole and Pittman.
Greene County goes to Denison tonight to meet Denison-Schleswig in non-conference action in the final game of this week. The Monarchs are 6-13 and are members of the Hawkeye 10 Conference.
