As summer temperatures rise, gardeners continue preparing their outdoor plants.

Master Gardener with Guthrie County Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Barb Gigar suggests that for ornamental plants like non-vegetable or fruit plants, perennials are often more successful than annuals. She explains that perennials, having been established, are better adapted to local weather conditions. Gigar recommends choosing perennials that are well-suited to the Iowa climate, particularly native plants or cultivars derived from them, noting that many excellent options are available.

Gigar mentions that common perennials that thrive in Iowa include butterfly milkweed, peonies, goldenrod, and yarrow. She also advises considering a plant’s sun preference, whether it requires full sun, partial sun, partial shade, or other light conditions, as a crucial factor for its health.
