Summer has been a busy one at the county owned parks in Guthrie County.

Guthrie County Conservation Director Brad Halterman says that Memorial Day weekend is what his department considers the start of summer, as it is the first of three big weekends that they have while the parks are open. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio how things have been going so far since the parks opened back up.

“We’ve had a really good summer. We’ve gotten a lot of campground use in our two campgrounds at Lennon Mill and Nations Bridge Park, had a lot of folks out on the Raccoon River Valley Trail. We’ve gotten some intermittent rains here and there that have allowed the river levels to be at a point where we’re able to see a lot more canoers and kayakers and folks out on the river utilizing that resource also. So that’s good to see. But yeah, we’ve had a busy start to the summer and it’s gone by quick.”

Halterman mentions that the next big weekend coming up is of course the 4th of July, and that he and the Conservation Department are looking forward to having the campgrounds packed for the holiday. He adds that the unofficial end of summer, and the last big weekend that they will have at the campgrounds is Labor Day, so he’s looking forward to seeing the parks used heavily until then.
