Independence Day is on Friday, and with Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds signing Senate File 303 into law, there is a new ordinance that both the City of Perry and Adel will need to follow.
The law states that cities or counties can regulate shooting off fireworks on days excluding July 3rd, 4th, and December 31st. According to Perry Police Chief Jim Archer, people can use fireworks tomorrow between the hours of 9am and 10pm, then again on Friday from 9am to 11pm. He stresses that if people are caught shooting them off outside of those time frames, it can result in a $250 fine. Archer implores people that will be shooting them off to please clean up after themselves.
“Be mindful that you pick up your trash, and then also be mindful of where those fireworks are going to be landing because they could start a fire. So we just want people to be safe and make sure when you are celebrating that adults are supervising things, and children really shouldn’t be lighting off fireworks because you can get some pretty serious injuries.”
Adel Mayor Jim Peters shares that the same ordinance as Perry will be enforced, where residents can shoot off fireworks tomorrow between 9am and 10pm, and Friday from 9am to 11pm. He explains that he’s spoken with law enforcement, and encourages residents to consider people who suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, those with young children, and pet owners. Similar to Perry, Peters stresses that the City of Adel will crack down on people that attempt to shoot off fireworks outside of the suggested times.
