The Jefferson Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post #9599 has a service that they provide to the community for free.

VFW Post Commander Jim Martin says there is a US Flag dropbox located directly in front of the VFW Hall on the east side of the downtown square in Jefferson. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio the US Flag should be replaced anytime it is fraying, torn or tattered and the dropbox is here for people to use for those situations.

“Well when they come down you got to have a place to drop it off so it would be disposed of properly, and that’s what the drop box does. When it gets filled up, I clean out the drop box and I dispose of the American Flag the way that we’re supposed to. It’s not going to end up in no landfill or nothing like that.”

Mike Daves with the Jefferson VFW, says the dropbox came from the Jefferson Masonic Lodge #159, who helped arrange for it to be painted and they donated their time and knowledge to get it installed.

Martin points out that to properly destroy a US Flag, it needs to be burned separately and entirely. Then the ashes are collected and buried in respect of the flag. He adds that this is a service for the community that the Jefferson VFW felt was something they could provide.
