
The postseason started in Jefferson last night for the Greene County Rams softball team. Coach Tom Kennedy’s squad hosted Des Moines Christian with the Rams winning the Class 3A Region 4 quarterfinal by a score of 6-1. The Rams advance to the semifinals tomorrow night in Monroe vs. fourth ranked PCM at 7 p.m. on KG98 and www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
The Rams improved to 16-11 while the very young Lions end the season at 14-14. Greene County scored a run in the second and the Lions tied the game with their only run in the third. Greene County quickly regained the lead with two runs in the third, then added one in the fourth, and two more in the fifth. It was six runs on eight hits, three errors, and nine left on for the Rams. The Lions had a run on three singles, three errors, and eight left on.
Senior Payton Kokenge had a single and double, and senior Chanlyn Cunningham added two singles. Sophomores Alivya Smith, Makenna Ebersole, and Sara Morlan had singles, as did junior Kaycee Pittman. Sophomore Bellah Johnson had a run batted in, as did Pittman and Cunningham.
Sophomore Alaina Heard went all seven innings for the pitching victory. She struck out 10 batters and walked five. Eighth grader Alli Harrigan took the loss for DMC. The Lions 10 person startmg lineup consisted of three eighth graders, five freshmen, and two juniors.
Heart of Iowa Activities Conference Champion and fourth ranked PCM is next in Monroe on Saturday night at 7 on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. The Mustangs are 23-4 and have 7-0 and 8-2 victories this season vs. Greene County. PCM won its first round game in Monroe last night vs. Southeast Valley (Gowrie) by a run rule victory in 4-1/2 innings, 8-0.
