The Dallas County Conservation Board will be hosting an outdoor program on Saturday, with the hope of seeing lots of flying creatures.
The board is inviting people out to Voas Nature Area, 19286 Lexington Road, in Minburn for a bird hike. Naturalist Mike Havlick highlights the hike will venture to the Wetland Mitigation Bank, which is one of the last wetland complexes in Dallas County that features an overlook with a huge basin to identify many types of wildlife. He names some of the birds he’s hoping to see are trumpeter swans, a Great-Tailed Grackle, yellow-headed blackbirds, a Pied-billed Grebe, and many more. Havlick shares that more birds may be out now because of their babies.
“A month ago, they were all sitting on nests, we wouldn’t have seen anything. The fun part about birding now is they have youngs, and so birds are usually quiet and secretive (but) they can’t be because their babies are going ‘feed me, feed me, feed me, feed me’ and so we might get to see stuff that’s been there the whole time right under our noses, but hasn’t been vocal, and the babies will sell them out.”
Havlick describes that the entire event will last two and a half hours, but there will be multiple stops along the way to attempt and see the different species of birds. The hike is happening from 8-10:30am on Saturday, with Havlick confirming the event is free, but encouraging people to register in order to get a proper head count. To register, click here.
