A leader from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach highlights the work being done in the state to assist young farmers.

ISU Extension Vice President Jason Henderson explains that the organization reaches 125,000 youth in Iowa through 4-H every year. He describes that they are taught skills through experience based learning with an emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics; as well as agriculture and leadership. Henderson acknowledges that ISU Extension has been in existence since the early 1900s and shares ways the organization is benefitting Iowans.

“The beauty of extension is our connections. Not only within the county, but connections across the whole state. We work each and every day to make life better in Iowa and Dallas County. Connecting Iowans to resources of Iowa State University that’s science-based, research-validated, and our experts and educators are connected into a network. A network not only at Iowa State University, but also nationally across the country.”

Henderson says ISU Extension caters to many programs including master gardening, housing, readiness, disaster response, and healthy living. He indicates the idea is preparing future generations to give them tools and confidence for lifelong success.
