A portion of U.S. Highway 169 that travels through Adel will be given a new speed limit starting tomorrow.

Adel Mayor Jim Peters tells Raccoon Valley Radio that the stretch from Timberview Drive to Bradfield street will go from 50 miles per hour to 45. He details that the Iowa Department of Transportation made the decision to adjust the speed limit, since they own the road, but the City of Adel had some input.

Peters notes that a contributing factor for the change was the area witnessed a high amount of accidents, and that the new Adel-DeSoto-Minburn High School, which is currently under construction, will be along that line. He is hearing rumblings from the public on both sides of the issue.

“I’m not on social media, but I was talking to somebody who said there’s comments both ways. ‘Why wasn’t this done earlier and how come this is done. So I’m not sure what the percentages are of where folks land on it, but certainly, slower speed limits will improve safety.”

Peters indicates that there will not be any other areas within the Adel city limits that will feature a speed limit change at this time. He confirms that there will be a roundabout that will eventually be added between Timberview Drive and Bradfield Street. The speed limit reduction will begin tomorrow.
