There has been a development to the east of the Greene County High School in Jefferson.
Superintendent Brett Abbotts says two practice fields are being installed, which are the equivalent sizes of full soccer fields. The high school football and soccer teams have been practicing on the fields next to Linduska Field and Abbotts explains why the decision was made to build new practice fields instead of renovating the current ones.
“Our concern with redoing the ones here at the middle school was the significant cost that would go into having to put in irrigation. If we’re going to talk about needing to level them, and then reseed them or resod them, and then get irrigation to them. We decided that we’re going to put them out at the high school so that while those are being prepared at least we would still have something here that our kids would still be able to practice on, so we wouldn’t have any lag time in that.”
Abbotts points out that by having a practice area next to the high school, it would also eliminate the drive time for students to get to the middle school, they could utilize the locker rooms that are there and the band could use it to practice on. He states that Andy Murphy of Murphy Excavating is grading the land and the School Board approved earlier this month for Iowa Irrigation to install the irrigation system for $23,976.
Abbotts anticipates having the new fields ready by next fall season. He adds that the current practice fields will remain for middle school sports to use.
