Greene County went 7-15 in varsity baseball, losing in the opening round of Class 3A Substate 1 to eventual State Qualifier Bishop Heelan of Sioux City. Despite not advancing in the postseason, Coach Kyle Stalder’s Rams had a strong second half after starting the season 1-10, and that was on the heels of a 2-20 record last season.

Improvement was seen in several areas, including pitching, where 11 players threw pitches in at least one varsity game. Seniors Crew Conner and Noah Hinote both had 3-3 records and tossed the most innings with Hinote at 40-2/3 and Conner with 33-1/3. Among Rams with at least a dozen varsity innings, Hinote had the lowest earned run average at 4.30 with Conner at 5.88. Junior Nathan Towers had a 5.32 ERA and was 1-2 on the mound, and his victory was the biggest upset of the season, a 9-6 win at Saydel in Des Moines. The Eagles were ranked eighth in Class 3A at the time and they will be playing in next week’s State Tournament in Sioux City.
