An Iowa-based legislator is challenging congress at the state level regarding President Donald Trump’s action on Russia.

President Trump held a meeting at the Oval Office on July 14th to announce that he plans to send weapons to Ukraine and warned of severe tariffs on Russia if there was no ceasefire deal in 50 days. Iowa’s 3rd District and U.S. Congressman Zach Nunn shares that there are lots of examples of Russian forces manipulating the system in order to achieve what they want.

Nunn believes that their actions must be held accountable, and favors President Trump putting Russian President Vladimir Putin on a timetable for a ceasefire. He wants to be proactive and drafted up a letter called “The Peace Act” as he elaborates the goal it’s hoping to accomplish.

“To sanction foreign banks that are supporting Russian actors. It’s going to help tighten the enforcement of that, something that was lacking under the last four years under the Biden Administration, and it blocks the criminal’s access to global financial systems, which effectively are pulling dollars out of the United States to go to Russia to pay for its war machines. That stops now.”

Nunn shares that he serves as the Chairperson of the National Security Task Force in congress and built a team of colleagues to petition the letter he wrote to advocate for broader full-spectrum sanctions. He confirms that this strategy will give President Trump the ability to use the tools of the sanction’s arsenal to leverage against Putin at the time and place of his choosing.
