The Greene County Historical Society is teaming up with a local business to provide a unique activity.
Kristin Lang is the owner of Warm Wishes in downtown Jefferson and is hosting in conjunction with the Historical Society, a program called “Letters From Home” this Sunday at 2pm. Lang says the event will begin with a few presenters with the Historical Society reading from letters that they received and then attendees will have a chance to select their own stationary, write a letter to someone, pick out an envelope and a stamp and mail it, all for free.
Historical Society member Margaret Hamilton describes letters being a form of history.
“If you keep letters from someone who has died or from someone you don’t see often and you go back and read them, it can really be meaningful and really hit home. And at the same time, history is often written based on letters. So they’re historical artifacts.”
Lang points out the significance that a handwritten letter can have on someone.
“People love getting letters. When you think about the mail you get to actually see a letter from someone in your mail is really special. And so we hope when you come to this program you can leave with at least one letter, and then you can just drop it in the mail and you’re going to make someone’s week after that.”
Sunday’s program is free and open to the public.
