On Tuesday, the Dallas Center-Grimes Mustangs softball team looked at an uphill battle, facing off against the Cedar Rapids-Xavier Saints who were ranked #1 in Class 4A entering the state tournament. DCG would keep the game close and hang on, but would fall to the Saints 2-0 ending their season and state tournament run.
After falling to the Pella Dutch in the first round, Xavier returned to the diamond looking for revenge, as the Saints would strike out 14 Mustangs within the seven inning contest. Tessa Jones and Kale Montag would share the pitching duties, as Jones would start on the mound, pitching through five complete innings allowing three hits, two runs, and punching out seven Saints. Montag would pitch the sixth inning to close the game for the Mustangs.
Delaney Fetters and Sophia Bauman would notch in the only two hits for DCG, as Bauman would hit a single but would get caught trying to get extra basses while sliding into second. Fetters would lay a bunt down and make it to first in time, but would be left stranded by the Mustang offense.
Although the season has come to an end, there is nothing to hang their head on as the Mustangs hung on against a very dominant Xavier squad.
