Saydel’s (Des Moines) loss in the semifinals of the Class 3A State Baseball Tournament means the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference All-Conference selections are now made public as all nine HOIAC have completed their seasons.

Four Greene County High School baseball players received recognition of some kind from conference coaches. Senior Crew Conner and sophomore Jaron Jacobs were second team sections while seniors Noah Hinote and Gavyn Winters were on the honorable mention list. The Rams were 4-12 in conference play, good for seventh place, and they went 7-15 overall.

Conner, the first baseman and pitcher for the Rams, was named as an infielder. He batted .314 to lead Greene County players with more than 20 at-bats. The lefty also had five doubles, a triple, seven runs batted in and 10 runs scored. As a pitcher he went 3-3 with a 5.88 earned run average. An outstanding defender at both positions, he had just four errors all season.

Jacobs was named as a utility player although he caught nearly every inning for the Rams. He came on strong at the plate late in the season adding nearly 100 points to his batting average the last two weeks of the season, finishing at .275. He had 15 assists on the second behind the plate between fielding balls in front of the plate and getting outs, tagging runners out at the plate, or throwing them out trying to steal a base. The sophomore was charged with just three errors in 22 games.

Hinote improved greatly at the dish by batting .297, well over 100 points higher than a season ago. He had a .357 on-base percentage and knocked in nine runs. The right-hander played shortstop when not pitching and he went 3-3 on the mound with a 4.30 ERA.

Winters patrolled centerfield for the Rams and head coach Kyle Stalder told Raccoon Valley Radio Winters played some of the best centerfield he’s seen. The senior had 50 put outs and no errors in 22 games. At the plate, the left-handed hitter batted .214 with two doubles, eight RBI and 16 runs scored.

Saydel and West Marshall (State Center) tied for the HOIAC title.
