The USA Track & Field Championships are just two days away for Jefferson’s Carter Morton. The University of Northern Iowa track & field first team All-American goes into the decathlon Thursday and Friday in Eugene, OR with the eleventh best score this year by an American.

Already one of UNI’s most decorated track & field athletes with one more year of college eligibility, he’ll be in this week’s field in Eugene with USA’s best decathletes. Dave Paulsen, the Panthers’ Director of Track & Field, told Raccoon Valley Radio Morton’s rise to national prominence in the 10 event decathlon is incredible considering he was a high jumper and hurdler when he arrived on the Cedar Falls campus. “It just proves the point that as long as you put yourself in the right environment and you have a really good work ethic, you can accomplish some pretty special things. He’s just done such a great job that nothing he does surprises us anymore because he’s been doing it for so long in college we say “Oh, that’s just Classic Carter!”

The 2020 Greene County High School graduate is the son of Chad & Deb Morton of Jefferson.
