Severe weather affected the Raccoon Valley Radio listening area late Tuesday night, with torrential rain and strong winds.

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for western Greene and Guthrie counties at 12:45am following a storm being located along a line four miles southeast of Auburn to Templeton. Raccoon Valley Radio’s Severe Weather Action Team was on the air by 12:50am. Around 1:15am, the National Weather Service then issued a new thunderstorm warning for western Greene County, northern Guthrie County and northwestern Dallas County when a storm was spotted near Lanesboro to Scranton moving east at 30 miles per hour.

According to Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams, there was pea size hail in the Scranton area close to 8pm, several hours prior to the warnings being issued by the National Weather Service. The warning was originally set to expire at 1:30am, but was extended to 2:30am when the thunderstorms were located five miles west of Guthrie Center to near Anita moving east at 25 miles per hour. A meteorologist with the National Weather Service reported Minburn receiving approximately just under one inch of rain and between 30-35 mph wind gusts within 30 minutes. The warning got another small extension, before allowing it to expire at 2:45am.

There were five staff members with Raccoon Valley Radio’s Severe Weather Action Team, along with Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams and Weatherology as part of the coverage. Raccoon Valley Radio’s Severe Weather Action Team provides live coverage of severe thunderstorm or tornado warnings for Dallas, Guthrie, and Greene counties until the storms move out of the coverage area or drop below severe levels.
