An Iowa-based legislator, who serves at the state level, responds to a decision made by the U.S. Supreme Court pertaining to school districts.
Recently, the Supreme Court gave President Donald Trump the authority to lay off nearly 1,400 employees with the Department of Education. Iowa’s 3rd District and U.S. Congressman Zach Nunn shares that he believes the Supreme Court made the correct choice as he says every president has the right to hold federal agencies accountable for their actions.
Nunn indicates that there wasn’t much done to monitor federal agencies under the Biden Administration. He states that the Department of Ed’s budget has ballooned to approximately $300 billion even though student outcomes are suffering. Nunn describes that it’s a fundamentally inefficient program that needs to be addressed.
“In Iowa, we’ve been able to get this right. We trust parents, we trust teachers, we trust our local school boards, not some bureaucratic in (Washington) D.C. to shape education. Iowa’s model focuses on outcomes, it focuses on flexibility, and it metrics it with student-driven progress, not arbitrary mandates coming out of the federal government. We have seen for years how federal dollars too often come with strings attached that stifle innovation, instead of supporting it, harm local school districts and really hamstring states that are trying to do this the right way.”
Nunn reveals that his education decisions stay close to residents within their communities. He adds that he’s also making sure that Iowa’s rural programs, special education and title one funding are protected and delivered without disruption.
