The Dallas County Conservation Board will be rolling out a special program on Monday featuring a nocturnal bird.

The conservation board is welcoming people out to their “Big Owls Hoot, Little Owls Toot” event at the Forest Park Museum, 14581 K Avenue, in Perry. According to Naturalist Mike Havlick, Monday is International Owl Awareness Day, and at the Forest Park Museum, there is a live barred owl to help educate the public about conservation concepts. He reveals that the program will be interactive as they will release the owl to tell her story behind why the conservation board has her, but for participants to utilize the skills they’re going to learn.

“We’ll teach you how to make the owl calls. We don’t want you to come to a program, we’re going to actually teach you how to go out and call our three most common owl species in Iowa. so you’ll leave with a bit better understanding and then we’ll do a little owl song.”

Havlick describes that the owl is on display at the Forest Park Museum year-round, encouraging people to come see her whenever they’d like. He shares that the program is free for people of all ages, and is happening Monday morning from 10:30-11:30am.
