The first noticeable portions of the new Greene County Jail project are taking shape.
Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams says the pre-cast concrete walls are being installed at the site, which is south of the Law Enforcement Center Administration Building on East Lincoln Way in Jefferson. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio despite the recent five inches of rainfall forcing a three day delay on the project, it is a nice sight to see the walls finally going up, after they were delivered on July 28th.
“It’s nice to see the walls going up and people are definitely noticing it. They comment that ‘It’s nice to see progress.’ They (the contractor) were actually about a month ahead of schedule and then had to wait for the walls to show up. So, I think everything’s been going really good and we’re still staying still a little bit under budget.”
Williams points out that after the walls are installed, the next step will be to put on the roof. Another item that Williams says isn’t an issue is having any materials for the new jail being impacted by the sweeping tariffs on imported goods to the US, since all of the items for the project have been purchased.
Williams adds that the 17 cell jail is scheduled to be completed by September of 2026, pending other delays or inclement weather.
