A weekend fire resulted in an abandoned home north of Jefferson to be destroyed.
Jefferson Fire Chief Jack Williams says the Jefferson and Churdan Fire Departments, along with the Greene County Sheriff’s Office and Greene County Ambulance responded to the scene at 3:06pm Sunday afternoon in the 700 block of L Avenue. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio an apparent lightning strike from an earlier thunderstorm caused the metal roof of the structure to catch fire and then burn down into the home.
Williams notes that a lot of times if during a thunderstorm that lightning strikes a home that has a metal roof, it can take several hours for the ambers to start a fire. He states that fire crews were on scene for ten hours and that the home was deemed a total loss. Williams points out that the water tanker the fire department used that holds 7,000 gallons of water was a huge help in that situation. He adds that no one was inside the building when the fire happened and there was nothing valuable in it.
