The Greene County Historical Society is hosting a free program on Sunday that looks back at one specific aspect during World War II.

Program Director Margaret Hamilton says they are hosting a presentation on the two Prisoner of War (POW) camps that were located in Iowa, including Algona and Clarinda. She reveals that the Director of Honors Education with the Department of Teacher Education at Simpson College Chad Timm will be the guest speaker, who has lots of knowledge on the subject. Hamilton points out that there are some local connections with various military service men who were also POWs.

“Bob Carman is the most famous one, he’s on the Freedom Rock. But also Lumund Wilsox, for instance, was a Prisoner of War and there were a couple of others, and so, it’s something that Greene County does have in common with. And I think it’s interesting because the Prisoners of War that were in Iowa did things like work for local farmers in that area. So, they were out in the community and were part of the community during the war and it’s something that we don’t think about often today.”

The free program begins at 2pm on Sunday at the Greene County Museum in Jefferson. Refreshments will be served and registrations are not necessary.
