Jefferson residents that have old or expired hazardous materials that they want to get rid of can do so in a safe way tomorrow morning.

City Administrator Scott Peterson says the city is partnering with Metro Waste Authority to host the Hazardous Waste Drop-Off tomorrow from 9-11am on the north side of the downtown square. He explains that this annual program is made possible because of the city’s partnership with Metro Waste Authority, where garbage and recyclables are disposed of.

“For our residences, this is included then in the fees that they pay to the city. If there’s some unique commercial type of drop off, if you have a large drop off, there may be some additional charge to the commercial users. But again, for our residences this one’s a freebee, you get to come get that service, knowing of course that you paid for that through your garbage rate throughout the year.”

Items that Jefferson residents can dispose of during that time include aerosol cleaners and paints, antifreeze, oil and lead-based paints, fluorescent light bulbs, stains and varnishes, sharps and needles that are in containers, among other items. Items that won’t be accepted include fire extinguishers, latex paint, propane tanks and cylinders, among other items. Peterson adds that there will be cones set up as a drive-thru system for residents to drop off those materials.
