A contractor is coming to the city of Jefferson to perform routine maintenance work on some vital infrastructure.

Public Works Director Dave Morlan says the sewer lines are flushed out annually, which is what is going to be taking place soon. Morlan notes that while residents will not see any interruption or complications from these services going on, he does have some recommendations to further prevent sewer lines from getting blocked.

“(A) Couple of the biggest things that people should not flush be like, they call them flushable wipes, but they’re not flushable, they need to be thrown away. Those will plug up a main pretty good, pretty fast, and then grease. If you use cooking grease for cooking don’t put it down the sinks because that gets into the mains and balls up and plugs up too. Those things don’t belong in the sewer.”

City Administrator Scott Peterson says the contractor is also going to be focusing on an area of town near the Greene County Fairgrounds that has historically had issues.

“That area in particular is served by a couple of different types of drainage districts. One actually flows to the south and east from there (and) one flows to the north. So that big parking area to the north is served by this drainage district that drains to the north. That’s the one that we’ll be addressing here and see what we can do about getting that cleaned and really enhance the functioning of that.”

Peterson is hoping that by having this done, it will help to alleviate issues for a while.
