The Iowa State Fair may be over, but there is still some positive news to share from Greene County.
According to Greene County ISU Extension 4-H and Youth Coordinator Samantha Hardaway says the final highlights from the livestock results for 4-H’ers includes Stella Lautner placing third overall for Market Heifers, Tatum Tucker had three purple ribbons and was named the Division 1 Fourth Honorable Mention for Breeding Meat Goats, Becca Shahan had one purple ribbon for Market Meat Goats and Brayden Theulen earned four 1st places, two purple ribbons and was tabbed as the Novice Premier Breeder for rabbits.
Hardaway points out of the 32 static exhibits that qualified for the state fair, 19 received blue ribbons and ten red ribbons. She talks about the judging process at the state fair is different than at county fair, in that the state fair judges don’t talk to the 4-H’ers like they do at the county fair, but only critique them based on their goal sheets.
“It all comes down to their goal sheet and how well they fill that out. So the kids often take a lot time after county fair to add a little bit more to that goal sheet, get everything explained that they want, because once I hand that judge the project that’s all the judge knows about the project, they can’t ask anymore questions. So it’s really important to have a strong goal sheet when headed down to the state fair.”
Additionally, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship announced that four Greene County farms were designated as Century Farms and one was recognized as a Heritage Farm. According to IDALS, to be considered as a Century or Heritage Farm, the farmland needs to have at least 40 acres of original farmland, have consecutive ownership within the same family for 100 years or 150 years or more, respectively and the present farm owner must be related to the original landowner. Those are listed below.
