With the mayoral and city council elections coming up in November, the Jefferson City Council will have three seats available.
City Administrator Scott Peterson says those are currently held by Harry Ahrenholtz, Darren Jackson and Pat Zmolek. He notes that anyone who is interested in running for city council this November must fill out a nomination form with a minimum of 25 signatures and those can be submitted to the Greene County Auditor’s Office anytime between August 25th and September 18th. Peterson points out that as a city council member, you are part of the policy making process for the city and the main part of that system is based on the committee structure.
“The council members are signed on to committees and those committees focus on certain issues. And then as they work through those issues, those issues then are ultimately brought to the city council. So opportunity there to really specialize in those interests that peak your interest as a city council member.”
Peterson notes that being on a city council is a public office that represents everyone within city limits, as all council seats are at-large.
“These city council positions, you know, it’s a great way to give back to the community. We’ve had some great council members and really look for always a little bit of excitement during election season.”
Peterson adds that nomination forms can be picked up at City Hall or at the County Auditor’s Office. Raccoon Valley Radio will announce all of the candidates for Jefferson City Council after the nomination filing deadline has passed.
