As students will be back in school soon, a health expert in Dallas County outlines ways to ensure youth are eating well-balanced meals.

Community Health Educator Natalie Peters tells Raccoon Valley Radio that healthy balanced lunches give proper fuel and nutrients the students need to be able to function throughout the day. She describes that a good meal helps sustain energy levels, caters to the ability to better focus on completing tasks, and contributes to maintaining a stable blood sugar level. Peters reveals what a healthy balanced meal looks like.

“When you’re packing a lunch, think of the ‘My Plate’ symbol, and that can help you remember what you prioritize in your lunch or your student’s lunch. So start with a lean protein like grilled chicken, beans, or hard boiled eggs, and then add in some whole grains, such as whole wheat bread or brown rice, and then be sure to include plenty of fruits and veggies. You can also include some healthy snacks like yogurt, hummus, or nuts between meal times when you’re hungry. And then be sure to always have a reusable water bottle on hand, so you can stay hydrated.”

Peters provides tips about food safety, noting that people should use a cooler bag with frozen packs in order to keep perishable foods cold. On the contrary, she suggests utilizing an insulated thermos to keep warmer foods at a good temperature. Peters throws out that people need to wash their hands or use wipes before digging into food.
