Greene County opened its 2025 varsity volleyball season on Tuesday at Dallas Center-Grimes High School vs. three opponents ranked in the preseason by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. Coach Chris Heisterkamp’s team went 0-3 on the night in the best of three format with sets going to 21 points.
The night started with a win over Class 4A number 13 DC-G 21-18 in the first set, but what followed was a loss in set two by a 7-21 score, and 12-15 in the deciding set, The Rams lost both sets to Iowa’s largest high school, Valley of West Des Moines, ranked seventh in 5A. Scores were 17-21 and 13-21. The final match was against 4A number 9 Ballard (Huxley) by scores of 21-23 and 11-21. The Rams led the Bombers 17-12 and 20-17 in set one, but could not finish the set on top.
Coach Heisterkamp told Raccoon Valley Radio the Rams had a wonderful first set, but overall, unforced errors were a factor in the three losses. Unofficial bench stats show senior Lila Osterson and sophomore Hannah Fouch each with 12 kills on the night. Junior Bellah Johnson led in digs with nine with five for Osterson. Osterson and senior Calleigh Fitzpatrick had six blocks each with sophomore Ashlynn Ball recording four blocks.
The Rams won’t play again next week when they meet Class 5A Ames and 2A second ranked Kuemper Catholic (Carroll) at Ames High on Sept. 2.
