
Class 2A number 6 Woodward-Granger and Class 3A Greene County played non-district high school football last night in Jefferson at Linduska Field with the sixth ranked Hawks coming out on top 35-19. Both teams entered the contest 1-0 on the season in a game heard on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
Talen Fuson and the offensive line of the Hawks were too much for the Rams. After a scoreless first quarter, the Hawks led 7-0 with 5:59 to play before halftime. The Rams countered with a touchdown pass from junior Zach Stalder to ???? With seconds to go in the second quarter the Rams faced a fourth down and three at their 17 yard line and a high punt snap recovered by the Rams resulted in a first and goal from Greene County’s five, and the Hawks scored on the next play with only six seconds remaining before the half ended. Leading 14-6 at the break, W-G drove the ball down the field to begin the third quarter, taking a 21-6 lead. After getting to within 21-12, the Rams could get no closer. W-G upped the advantage to 35-12 before the Rams scored the last seven points with 44 seconds left in the game for a final 35-19 margin.
Fuson ended with 179 rushing yards on 25 carries and a pair of touchdowns. He threw for 74 yards, going 7-10-1 yards. W-G totaled 373 yards with 299 on the ground on 54 rushes. Ethan Dunlavy ran the ball 21 times for 93 yards.
For the second straight game, Ram QB Zach Stalder threw for more than 200 yards and three TDs. He connected with junior Jaron Jacobs for a 46 yard TD, then for 46 more and a score to junior Lincoln Schwander, and finally to junior Brennan Jacobs on a fourth and goal from the 30 yard line in the final minute. Stalder finished with 215 passing yards on 10 for 22 passing with no interceptions. The running game mustered just 24 yards on 13 attempts. The TD plays were the first for Jaron Jacobs and Schwander, and the second this season for Brennan Jacobs.
Junior Trevon Keely had 53 yards on five catches and he intercepted a pass off a deflection. Jaron Jacobs had 81 receiving yards on two catches.
Greene County is on the road in week 3 at Saydel High School, but the opponent is Grand View Christian, which does not have its own football field. Game time Sept. 12 is 7 p.m. with coverage at 6:30 p.m. on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
