On Tuesday, fourth graders from Greene County and Paton-Churdan School Districts enjoyed a morning outdoors, learning about the leading industry for the county.

Greene County Farm Bureau sponsored the Farm Tour at Connor and Lindsey Juergenson Family Farm in Churdan. Farm Bureau Board President Alicia Heun said this annual event helps to educate students about a wide range of agricultural aspects with different stations that the youth rotate through. She explained that the Farm Tour exemplifies what Farm Bureau is about, which is ensuring there are rural vibrant communities and supporting and advocating for agriculture.

“We want the kids to understand where they’re food comes from, we want them to understand why it’s important to be safe around a tractor, we want them to understand when they go to a fuel pump – when they start to drive – that they should pick ethanol, and so for us it’s just really building that base. There’s so few people that are involved in production agriculture anymore, this is one of our crown jewels of our year just trying to help get the kids excited and get a little taste of what agriculture is like in their back yard.”

The stations included farm safety with Greene County FFA, the cost to farm with Home State Bank, Iowa Corn Association brought their Iowa Corn and Biofuels trailers, food and nutrition with Boone County Farm Bureau, along with sheep that was led by Brenda Anderson, cattle with Cale Juergensen and Brent Schroeder, Greene County Agronomy had a drone, AMVC talked about pigs and conservation was led by Skylar Bardole.

Heun thanked Home State Bank and Farm Credit Services for sponsoring lunch that was grilled by the Greene County Cattlemen’s Association.
