The teen that was killed over the weekend in Guthrie County was a student at Panorama High School.
Panorama School District Superintendent Kasey Huebner says 17-year-old Savannah Matthias went to the high school and he released this statement following the tragic loss of the student.
“We appreciate our community thinking about Savannah, her family, and her friends. Savannah always had a smile on her face when walking through our doors. She cared, she listened, and understood what it took to put others first. We will miss her.”
The Iowa State Patrol says they are investigating the incident, when Matthias failed to negotiate a curve on Iowa Highway 44 this past Saturday, and crossed the centerline and hit head-on with an oncoming vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver and one of her minor passengers had minor injuries and another minor passenger had serious injuries and was taken to a Des Moines hospital by air ambulance.
Huebner states that the Panorama School District has counseling available for students should they seek it out.
