Iowa’s Third Congressional District Representative is sharing his thoughts of the aftermath following the assianation of political activist Charlie Kirk.
Sources say that Kirk, who was the co-founder of the conservative organization “Turning Point USA” was shot and killed at a political rally on a college campus in Utah. US Representative Zach Nunn says not only was the taking of Kirk’s life wrong, but it was also an assassination on one of the foundational structures to our country of the 1st Amendment and the right to free speech.
“It’s moments like these that I think also demand, we should collectively show leadership and stand united. Regardless of our (political) party, regardless of our beliefs, we all should know that we condemn political violence and the reckless rhetoric that it fuels.”
Nunn also believes that this is a test of the current political climate and believes that it is up to everyone to ensure that there continues to be safe areas where discord can happen.
“As we march forward on this, I think what Charlie’s legacy tells us is that we all have a role to play in not only defending our 1st Amendment and speaking passionately about things that we believe in. But we should never be calling for the death of others, using political violence as a means to achieve our ends, or getting to the point where this becomes an acceptable culture.”
Nunn adds that he doesn’t want to see anymore of what some people have done, which is to incentivize, encourage or celebrate the death of someone else because of their different political viewpoints.
