A non-profit that helps several central Iowa counties, including Guthrie County, is needing some assistance.

New Opportunities of Guthrie County Development Coordinator Rhonda Huggins says that at this time, she is the only one in the office for both New Opportunities and the Guthrie County Food Bank in Guthrie Center. She tells Raccoon Valley Radio why that is.

“One of the reasons that we’re short handed is because my volunteers were on a federally funded program that has not been refunded for this year. So that has affected my ability to serve clients in Guthrie County. I’m desperate for volunteers. So again, if there’s anybody out there that could, you know, at least give one day a week, if I could get five people to take one day a week to cover the week, that would be great.”

Huggins mentions that she is preparing for one of the busiest parts of the year for her office, with Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) applications to begin in October for the elderly and disabled. She adds that her office’s hours are 9am to 3pm on weekdays for both New Opportunities and the food bank.
