When Greene County and Perry meet in Class 3A District 6 football this Friday night, it will be the 95th renewal of the “Cowbell Game.” The Jefferson and Perry Rotary Clubs donated a cowbell that has stayed with the winning team since 1928 until the next game is played. In nearly 100 years of the “Cowbell” game there have only been brief interruptions in the series.
The Rams have 63 wins since the Cowbell was introduced with 29 for Perry and there have been two ties. As old as the “Cowbell Series” is, the football rivalry has actually been around for much longer. In 1898 the Perry YMCA team defeated the Jefferson High School team in the first football game between the two communities. The two high school teams started playing each other soon after. It’s one of the longest high school football rivalries in the state.
Friday’s game can be heard on KG98 and streamed on www.racconvalleyradio.com. Coverage starts at 6:30 p.m. and kickoff is at 7 p.m.
