October is Fire Prevention Month and the Adel Volunteer Fire Association will be educating the youth in multiple sessions during the second week in October.

Adel Fire Captain Jim Uthe acknowledges that firefighters will be making stops at daycares and schools in Adel to teach kids about fire safety, specifically the process of stop, drop, and roll; how to react in an emergency situation, plus a chance to meet real-life firefighters and examine the gear.

Uthe describes that the volunteer fire department is offering 20 free safety demonstrations from October 6th-10th during Fire Safety Week. He has been with the Adel Volunteer Fire Department for 17 years, and the sessions have been happening since he started. He loves being an advocate for the younger generation.

“The kids participate really well. They’re excited about it, so it’s fun. And just to not be scared of firefighters, we can look spooky with our masks and our gear on, and I just think that’s a real critical part of the visit itself.”

Uthe points out that although there isn’t a fee, people will need to register beforehand, as spots are limited to sign up. The link to sign up can be found by clicking here.
