Harvest is underway in Guthrie County, and there are things people should remember when they are on the road.
Guthrie County Sheriff Matt Harmann says that a big point of safety is rural intersections. He explains that drivers need to make sure to watch both ways before crossing the intersection, and go slow in areas where tall corn may be blocking your line of sight. Other things to keep in mind is don’t speed on rural roads, and watch for dust trails as a possible indicator that there may be someone else coming towards the intersection.
Harmann mentions another common place to remember safety is when following large farm equipment. He adds that this can be done by only passing in legal zones when there is enough room to do so, with no oncoming traffic, and to watch for equipment or vehicles pulling implements to make sudden turns into field drives.
Harmann shares that the final safety reminder he wants people to remember is to pay attention to deer, as they are more active during harvest and can suddenly enter the roadway from ditches or fields. He says that if you hit a deer, contact law enforcement for help with getting an accident report filed, and don’t veer for deer, as it is better to hit the animal straight on than to swerve to miss it and end up in the ditch.
