board-of-adjustment

Over 60 people attended a Jefferson Board of Adjustment meeting on Friday morning.

The Board approved a variance for a request by Lana and Derrek Teeples for their property at 307 Grauer Road. The couple is wanting to build a garage that would go six feet into the 30-foot setback on their corner lot. With the approval was a request for a land survey to establish where the official lot lines were.

The majority of the Board also voted to deny an appeal that was filed by Pastor Isaak Wrangler of 1907 Neola Avenue. The Board conducted an administrative review that Wrangler claimed a code violation had occurred with a special drag queen bingo event at The Centennial building this past May 3rd. He argued that the conclusion of an investigation that was done by the City Building and Code Enforcer Chad Stevens was not correct as the event had sexual intent, as per the definition from Webster’s Dictionary when applied to the city’s code with adult amusement.

Stevens said he didn’t find evidence that there was a violation, after he conducted an investigation and questioned attendees of the event. He asked the Board to consider the entire code section and not one part of it to make their decision, while he also thought there was no sexual intent that he found from the event.

A total of 17 people spoke during the public forum, in support and against the appeal. The vote was 3-0 with one abstention of Jeff Lamoureux.
