A special Story Time is happening later this week at the Jefferson Public Library.
Youth Services Librarian Bailey Mount says former Jefferson resident Kristin Bloomquist wrote the book, “Mimi’s Magic” and will be at the library on Friday from 4:30-5:30pm to read her children’s book and to talk about the inspiration behind it. Mount points out that “Mimi’s Magic” is about the close relationship that Bloomquist had with her grandmother and when her and her sibling visited their grandmother’s house, they would often go on adventures through her magic touch.
Mount notes that this program came together by coincidence when she reached out to Bloomquist.
“And it turned out that she was planning a trip up here. She hadn’t been back to Jefferson for a few decades and was already planning on coming to visit, and check out the Bell Tower and other local landmarks. So, it just so happened that we said, ‘Hey, would you be available for a children’s book reading?’ And it kind of took off from there.”
Mount sees lots of similarities from the book and with some of the families that she interacts with at the library.
“We do have quite a few toddlers and young families that have grandparents as support caregivers or primary caregivers, even. So I’m very excited that we’re having a local author come read a book that touches on that kind of representation that we see here in town.”
The free program is geared toward younger children, but she invites anyone who knows Bloomquist’s grandmother too. Following the Story Time, participants will also get a special coloring sheet that is provided by the Mahanay Memorial Carillon Tower and there will be copies of Bloomquist’s book available for purchase.
