One of the first firearm hunting seasons is now open.

Iowa Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officer Aron Arthur says the early muzzleloader deer season is from October 11th-19th. He points out that anyone who wants to participate during early muzzleloader, must wear at least a blaze orange vest, but he recommends wearing more blaze orange to be more easily seen.

With the first firearm season underway, Arthur talks about a new hunting license for disabled veterans.

“It’s essentially a bonus license for anybody that qualifies under the disabled veteran deer license. That license is good for any firearm established season. So they can use it during multiple seasons., you’ve got early muzzleloader, you got late muzzleloader (and) you’ve got the shotgun seasons.”

Arthur adds that the same documentation applies to prove that the individual is a disabled veteran in order to get the license. He also reminds everyone to make sure that you have a valid hunting license with you when you are out for the early muzzleloader season.
