The VFW Floyd Foster Post 2060 in Perry is celebrating the 250th Marine Corps Birthday and all Veterans with a piece of artwork that will be unveiled in November.

According to member Eddie Diaz, the organization is heading a community mural project, which will depict the famous U.S. Flag raising at Iwo Jima during World War II. He describes that the mural is being painted by Iowa artist Shawn Palek, and is being created to serve as a lasting public tribute to individuals who have dedicated their lives in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Diaz highlights that the mural will be located near the Raccoon River Valley and High Trestle bike trailheads, close to downtown Perry. He mentions that a dedication will happen alongside Perry’s annual Art on the Prairie Festival on November 9th at 1pm. Following that, Diaz adds that guests are welcome to celebrate the Marine Corps Birthday at the Proletariat Bar from 2-4pm. He concludes that donations are currently being accepted for the mural project, and can be done by sending a check to the VFW Foundation, P.O. Box 232, Perry, Iowa 50220.
