To commemorate a popular destination in Greene County, the Historical Society is presenting a free program on Sunday.

According to the Greene County Historical Society, Spring Lake Park is 100 years old this year and the free program to talk about its long pastime will be led by Grand Junction Library Director Alan Robinson. Organizers say from what the park started as a railroad gravel pit that turned into a privately owned resort and amusement park in 1925, it was home to jazz and morphed into Big Band music, to now a recreational park area.

The Historical Society explains that the open-air skating rink that is still in operation today, first opened in 1929. Spring Lake then became an Iowa state park in 1949 and has been under the management of the Greene County Conservation Department since 1969.

The program takes place at the Historical Museum in Jefferson at 2pm on Sunday.
