There are a few things home owners and renters should keep in mind when plugging items in in order to prevent possible fires from happening.
Stuart Assistant Fire Chief Shane Martinson says people need to remember to not overload their home’s outlets, as having too many things plugged in can cause a stress point, where it may trip the breaker the outlet is on or worse. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio what people should keep in mind about extension cords.
“Before using an electrical cord, you should first inspect cords for damage. Use only the correct type for indoor and outdoor use. Avoid using them as permanent wiring and do not overload them. Keep cords away from water and heat sources as well.”
Martinson mentions that these safety measures become more important as the holiday season approaches, as individuals are more likely to have decorations up, or preparing large amounts of food.
